Claude Design Burns Tokens Like Crazy

Anthropic recently came out with Claude Design. I'm not sure why there isn't a clear link to this from the app.

Consider that it is a beta release currently, but it is now available to Pro users and up. It is pretty awesome, but the thing is, it burns tokens like crazy.

I actually used Claude Design to create a slide deck without any kind of input. I just used a couple of blog posts (from this blog) and threw it all together.

To be honest, I was pretty impressed with the results it came up with. I recorded a video that shows you a bit about Claude Design; in particular, if you're going to be using it, you should watch this to be mindful about how to best maximize your tokens.

One nice thing, though, is that the Claude Design tokens are counted a little bit differently than your regular Claude Code tokens. It's a different measuring stick, so Claude Design is not going to burn through your Claude Code tokens.

To help save your tokens, here are the two most important things to understand:

  1. You do not need to use Opus for every task.
If you go down to Sonnet or even Haiku for smaller changes, that will save you a ton of tokens.
  2. Start a whole new chat in Claude Code, even if you are working on the same topic.
Every time you continue a chat, a lot of your tokens get used up by Claude reading the entire history thread in front of you. It burns tokens just from reading, not actually from creating. My number one tip is to ask Claude to summarize what it needs to start in a new chat after about 10 or 15 messages where you've delved into things.

Try Claude Design and let me know what you think.
